(IV) Artificial Intelligence in reacting flow research

The potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence for use in combustion science is discussed and examples of applications of these methods focusing on different aspects will be shown. Simple supervised machine learning techniques used to build black-box models have been used in combustion science for many years and are not in the focus of this presentation. In contrast, the use of machine learning to increase fundamental understanding of combustion processes or to assist in developing physics-based models is presented. Different examples demonstrate the use for parameter identification using the optimal estimator technique, parameter identification using unsupervised learning, and the development of reduced-order models. Finally, a sophisticated ML-algorithm is used to develop turbulent combustion models using semi-supervised machine learning.
